“Explore your mind, discover yourself, then give the best that is in you to your age and to your world. There are heroic possibilities waiting to be discovered in every person.” – Wilfred Peterson
We each have a superhero within us whispering, “You’ve got this one.”
Have you heard it? I have. And for a long time, I replied, “No, thanks.”
For years, I responded to my superhero voice by saying no. Firmly. My flight or fight response was always switched to flight and I stayed well within my comfort zone. It felt safe. I didn’t have to risk making a mistake or looking foolish. I told myself that I was glad I wasn’t taking any risks. My life was fine just as it was.
The funny thing, there were times I had taken a risk. And some big ones too. Looking back, I took those risks when I felt as though I had little choice. I felt as though I was making the only real choice available. But the truth is, I always had a choice.
After my divorce, my two young sons and I lived with my mother in Roxboro, North Carolina for a year. It was wonderful. But, I knew I couldn’t stay. I couldn’t get a job that would allow me to support my sons and I wanted them to grow up in their own home. As comfortable as it was to live with my mother, we needed a space to call our own. So, I packed up everything we had in our car and headed to Raleigh. I had no job yet. And my dad had paid three months’ rent on the apartment we got being very clear, he would not finance this move. That small voice inside me said, “You’ve got this.” Although I felt the weight of the decision and the pressure to make it work I replied, “Yes, I do.” Everything worked out just fine. I never looked back.
I’m sure you’ve got stories like this one. Moments when the options you had before you made the risk seem worth taking. Moments when the vision of what your life could be felt so right. Think about this for a moment. How would your life be different if you tuned into your superhero voice more regularly? Take a moment. Can you feel your imagination start to build a vision?
About ten years ago that voice captured my attention. I really listened and began building a life that honored and celebrated the direction that voice led me. Today, my life is filled with work opportunities and activities that I love. Hours fly by as I find myself totally immersed in the work I feel called to do. There have been some risks along the way, but saying yes continues to get easier each time.
The magic happens when you start to listen to your superhero voice regularly. Listening allows you to discover, or maybe rediscover, your is-ness. The “who you were” before you were a parent, a co-worker, a spouse or a friend. Your is-ness is the combination of your core values, your passions, and your strengths. And, because it is uniquely you, it gives rise to a voice that is yours alone – your superhero voice. And believe me when I say, the world desperately needs for you to bring your voice.
